University of Wollongong ก่อตั้งเมื่อปี 1951 โดยเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของ New South Wales University of Technology (ภายหลังเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น The University of New South Wales) ก่อนจะแยกตัวออกมาเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยอิสระในปี 1962

แคมปัสหลักของมหาวิทลัยตั้งอยู่ติดกับชายฝั่งทะเล ห่างจากใจกลางเมือง Wollongong ประมาณ 3 กิโลเมตร สามารถเดินทางเข้าเมืองได้สะดวกโดยรถบัสที่บริการฟรี หากต้องการเดินทางเข้าเมือง Sydney สามารถนั่งรถไฟโดยใช้เวลาประมาณ 1 ชั่วโมง 30 นาที จากสถานี North Wollongong ที่อยู่ใกล้กับมหาวิทยาลัย
