UK University Review Vol. 11 University of Surrey
สวัสดีค่า ยินดีต้อนรับเข้าสู่ UK University Review โดยพี่หนิงนะคะ วันนี้เราเดินทางมาถึง EP ที่ 11 กันแล้ว จะพาไปชมมหาวิทยาลัยอะไรดีนั้น เราไปดูกันเลยค่ะ
สำหรับวันนี้ มหาวิทยาลัยในประเทศอังกฤษที่เราจะพามาชมกัน ก็ไม่ใช่ที่ไหนไกลค่ะ นั่นก็คือ University of Surrey นั่นเองงงง เย่ๆๆๆ University of Surrey เป็นมหาวิทยาลัยที่ได้รับความนิยมมากพอสมควรเลยค่ะ เพราะว่าตั้งอยู่ที่เมือง Guildford ซึ่งเป็นเมืองที่ค่อนข้างสงบแล้วก็อยู่ไม่ไกลจากลอนดอนค่ะ ใช้เวลาเดินทางประมาณ 45 นาทีโดยรถไฟเท่านั้นเอง แถมยังสามารถเดินทางจากสนามบิน London Heathrow ใช้เวลาแค่ 30 นาทีโดยการขับรถอีกด้วย
ประวัติของมหาวิทยาลัยคร่าวๆ
University of Surrey ก่อตั้งและได้รับแต่งตั้งสถานะเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยเต็มตัวเมื่อ 9 กันยายน ปีค.ศ. 1966 โดยตั้งอยู่ ณ เมืองกิลฟอร์ดทางตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ของประเทศอังกฤษ มีด้วยกันสองวิทยาเขตคือ วิทยาเขต Stag Hill และวิทยาเขต Minor Park มหาวิทยาลัยเพิ่งจะฉลองครบ 50 ปีไปเมื่อ 4 ปีที่แล้วเองค่ะ อย่างไรก็ตาม หากย้อนกลับไปในยุคแรกเริ่ม มหาวิทยาลัยเคยเป็น Battersea Polytechnic Institute มาก่อน ซึ่งก่อตั้งมาตั้งแต่ปี 1891 โดยเน้นสอนด้านวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยีมาเป็นเวลายาวนานให้กับนักเรียนที่ University of London จนกลายมาเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยเต็มตัวอย่างทุกวันนี้
อีกหนึ่งสิ่งที่จะไม่กล่าวถึงไม่ได้ ก็คือ Surrey Research Park ค่ะ ที่นี่เป็นศูนย์วิจัยขนาดใหญ่ที่สำคัญมากๆ ของมหาวิทยาลัย โดยเริ่มก่อตั้งขึ้นในปี 1985 มีบริษัทชื่อดังกว่า 100 แห่ง และเจ้าหน้าที่กว่า 2,00 ชีวิตที่เข้าร่วมทำการวิจัย ณ ที่แห่งนี้ ทำให้มหาวิทยาลัยสามารถผลงานการวิจัยออกมาได้มากมาย
สำหรับ Facilities อื่นๆ ของมหาวิทยาลัย ก็ได้มีการลงทุนพัฒนามาตลอดเวลา เช่น หอพักของนักศึกษาที่มีการทุ่มเงินกว่า 130 ล้านปอนด์ (ประมาณ 5,200 ล้านบาท) เพื่อสร้างและซ่อมแซมให้มีความทันสมัยอยู่เสมอ หรือ Surrey Sports Park ก็ใช้เงินกว่า 36 ล้านปอนด์ (ประมาณ 1440 ล้านบาท) ในการสร้างและทำนุบำรุงเช่นกัน ยังมีตึกและคณะอื่นๆ ที่มหาวิทยาลัยได้ทุ่มจำนวนเม็ดเงินมหาศาลเพื่อมอบคุณภาพการเรียนการสอน และสภาพแวดล้อมที่ดีที่สุดให้แก่นักศึกษาและอาจารย์ พนักงานทุกคน เชื่อแล้วค่ะว่าเงินค่าเรียนที่จ่ายไป ไม่สูญเปล่าจริงๆ 5555
บรรยากาศทั่วไปของมหาวิทยาลัย
ตึกแรกที่เราจะเข้าไปดูกัน คือตึกที่เรียนว่า The Hive หรือรังผึ้งนั่นเองค่ะ ที่นี่เป็นเหมือน Communal Area สำหรับให้นักศึกษามานั่งพักผ่อน ประชุม คุยงาน ปริ้นงาน ที่นี่ค่ะ ด้านในตกแต่งไว้ได้อย่างสวยงาม โมเดิร์นมากทีเดียวค่ะ
เดินทะลุมาอีกหน่อยจะเจอร้านมากมาย ทั้ง Starbucks, Pizzaman, ธนาคาร Santander ห้องสมุด แล้วก็มาจบที่ Student Unions ค่ะ เสียดายที่วันที่พี่ไปเป็นวันอาทิตย์ บรรยากาศก็เลยจะค่อนข้างเงียบๆ ค่ะ แล้วหมอกลงเยอะมากกกก
คณะที่โดดเด่นของมหาวิทยาลัย
สำหรับวันนี้เราจะไปเยี่ยมชมคณะดังหลักๆ 2 ที่ด้วยกัน นั่นก็คือ Surrey Business School แล้วก็ School of Hospitality and Tourism Management นั่นเองค่ะ เห็นได้ชัดมากว่าเป็นคณะที่ได้รับความนิยมเพราะตึกเรียนเค้าใหญ่มากกกก ตั้งโดดเด่นเป็นสง่ากว่าที่อื่นๆ เลย
นอกจากคณะบริหารกับการโรงแรมแล้ว คณะวิศวกรรมศาสตร์เค้าก็ค่อนข้างมีชื่อเสียงค่ะ มี Surrey Space Centre ไว้เพื่อศึกษาเกี่ยวกับ Space Engineering ด้วย น่าสนใจมากๆ ค่ะ
มากันที่ตึกสุดท้ายแล้ว นั่นก็คือห้องสมุด The Library ค่ะ ห้องสมุดของที่ Surrey ก็ใหญ่ไม่แพ้มหาวิทยาลัยอื่นๆ เลยนะคะ มีทั้งหมด 6 ชั้นถ้ารวมชั้น G ด้วย ซึ่งหมวดของหนังสือแล้วก็ Facilities ต่างๆ จะแบ่งตามชั้นไปค่ะ ทางเข้าจะอยู่ที่ชั้น 1 ซึ่งถ้าเราไม่ได้เป็นสมาชิกของมหาวิทยาลัย จะต้องแลกบัตรเข้าไปนะคะ ไม่ใช่ว่าใครจะเข้าก็ได้ ห้องสมุดของที่นี่มีพื้นที่ให้เรียนกว่า 1700 ที่ และมีคอมพิวเตอร์ให้ใช้ 400 ตัว โดยปกติจะเปิด 24 ชั่วโมง 365 วันเลยค่ะ แต่เนื่องจากสถานการณ์ Covid-19 เลยทำให้ห้องสมุดตอนนี้เปิดแค่ 8 โมงเช้าถึงสองทุ่ม ถ้าใครจะมาใช้บริการ อย่าลืมเช็คเวลาทำการกันก่อนนะคะ
